Watermelon salad – madness part 2
Watermelon madness or color madness??
Do you need sunglasses yet?
Sorry, I just love this photo and it’s probably wrong for whatever gazillion color reason but I couldn’t resist posting it to make sure you were all wide awake… See the thing with these Plate to Page people is that they are never satisfied… Seriously… I post my watermelon icecream perfectly on time looking slick and shiny and guess what my dear friend Astrid cannot resist mentioning… “Where is the photo of the raw watermelon??” See what I mean? I had forgotten to take a photo of the raw thing… Simply because I was too busy using it in salads and icecream. And technically, if you think about it, in none of these cases was the melon ever cooked, baked, grilled or otherwise prepared, so technically you are looking at a photo of a raw watermelon right now… See it? The one in shocking pink, blue and red? Pretty isn’t it? Ofcourse – as much as I hate to admit it – Astrid was ofcourse right, so just for everyone’s peace of mind; here is the damn raw thing…
A raw watermelon…
It doesn’t look so very different from the one above, but I sort of took the idea of Ilva to make the watermelon into balls. Which incidently I left my melonball-cutter in the studio so I did this with a teaspoon measure. Works fairly ok.
Because Astrid made me take the photo on your left I felt I needed a new bowl to complete the task, so this afternoon after having lunch with my sister in Hilversum I made a little visit to the cookery shop (we don’t have one of that size in Almere, which is probably a good thing) and I ventured upstairs to have a look at the selection, only to be blinded by stunning, stunning plates, bowl, cups etc. They’re made in Portugal and the brandname is Mateus and I sort of fell in love with all of it. The problem is that one small bowl costs the shocking amount of 22 euro. And I bought two; the blue one above and the pink one on the left… That’ll be 50 euro’s please.. I know it’s ridiculous but I have only or mostly white bowls and that gets boring after a while. I have also decided I want to have the entire series for my regular plates. I’ll just buy a few each month… *deep sigh*… On the bright side; I really don’t spend that much money on shoes… So I can do the occasional splurge on plates, right?
Watermelon salad with feta, tomatoes and mint-vinaigrette
Now back to the salad at hand; delicious, fresh, summery with a slight salty taste due to the crumbled feta bits. I’ve had it twice already this week so it must be good. It’s so good in fact that Gizmo almost dove into the bowl before I could pull her out. (see the last photo below) It’s the bits of feta she was after, not the watermelon nor the tomato mind you.
Watermelon salad
Yield: 4
Prep Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 10 mins
Sweet with a slightly salty touch due to the feta. Fresh, delicious and perfect for a hot summer lunch or (very) light dinner
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
- 2 tbsp chopped mint
- cherry tomatoes in different sizes and colors about 200 gr
- 500 gr watermelon, cut into chunks
- 150 gr feta, crumbled
Directions:
- Make the dressing by mixing the vinegar, olive oil and mint and season to taste if needed.
- Put the tomatoes (keep smaller ones whole and cut larger ones in two) and watermelons in a bowl. Pour over the dressing and leave to stand for at least 10 minutes so the fruit can get really juicy.
- Crumble the feta over the top and serve.

It’s weird that a ‘naked’ watermelon is so hard to shoot… It’s pretty fruit but I had a hard time finding the right way to shoot it..

LOL you really make me laugh! Yes yes you can splurge on bowls! The bowl looks lovely and I love the loud pinks together. Gee whiz I missed this assignment since I found no watermelons but I’ll be on board for the next! I love this!

I smiled when I saw your picture of Gizmo, as my cat does the same without touching the food. Again lovely refreshing summer food with an abundunce of colour.

WOW! I am blinded by the color. It is very colorful, but what I like is the fact you are stepping out of that comfort zone and doing things you would never do. By the sounds of it you are having a blast. I so wish we could be together again just to do this – prop shop, rush home and take colorful, pictures. Love it Simone.

Well, when you spend more money on plates than on shoes, you KNOW you’re a foodie!
The salad looks wonderful, I’ve never tried combining watermelon with salty ingredients… Now I really want to!

How funny I just purchased the same pink fabric used here in your post oh and the bowl is to die for as well! I know what you mean about getting tired of the white plates and bowls. Gorgeous summer salad and one I make every year just never took a picture of it as good as you

Thanks..
I just decided to change all my plates and go for the serious of which you see the bowl in the picture. Not all blue but different colors. Just love the entire serie!

this screams summer to me. I typically add basil instead of mint. It’s also delicious with roasted beets.

Ah yes, I love basil too. I also exchange mint for basil a lot as I don’t always like the taste of mint in salads but it works really well in this vinaigrette. Not too overpowering.. (but I added less then in the original recipe)

I love the colors! So vibrant and lively! Gorgeous photos and adorable kitty

LOL – I’m with you on that score – I’d rather buy props than shoes hahaha! ADORE the kitty pic – clever her to nose out the feta so fast ;o) My mom always used to serve melon in balls – so this reminds me of childhood, and I LOVE the colours in the first photo!

What gorgeous pictures! And I absolutely love that blue bowl. So fresh and vibrant! I just made a similar salad with basil instead of mint. I never thought to add vinegar; must try that next time.
