Steamed quinoa dessert with rhubarb and an accident
Steamed quinoa
I drive a lot. Part of my job is going from one location to the next either in Europe or in Holland. Well mostly in Holland really, but once or twice every so many years I also have to drive to Germany, France or similar places. I love driving, I’m comfortable on the road and don’t mind having to get in the car. Never had an accident either until yesterday. I was on my way to a client to discuss the photoshoot we’re having end of May. Moodboard, ideas, that would all be discussed this particular morning in Amsterdam. It was raining hard, so not the best conditions to drive in and I had already called them that I would be a little later due to traffic jams.
I was almost there, about 800 meters left to go when I turned right on a busy street. Bicycle path was on my right and I had to cross that to get to the next street. I never saw the motorcycle speeding towards me and before we both new it, he had hit my car, or I had hit him, however you look at it and I saw someone tumbling down the street.
The next things that happened are almost a blur; I parked my car on the side of the road and ran to the man lying on the street. I half expected him to stand up and I would have loved it if he had then started shouting at me but no, he remained lying down softly moaning. Obviously in pain. I tried to say something, then realized I had to call 911 (or 112 in Holland) immediately so ran back to the car, grabbed my phone, went back to the man and started dialing.
By then, two people who had seen it happen, had stopped and that was a good thing as I started to get very shaky and the bystander got my phone from me and explained what had happened to the ambulance people. Thank God, the ambulance and police where there within 5 minutes, sirens blazing.
Both police and ambulance people where extremely nice to me. I guess it was pretty obvious that I was badly shaken, could hardly explain what had happened. They also couldn’t understand a word the poor motorman was saying, as it turns out he wasn’t Dutch and I’m not even sure he spoke English. One of the policeman led me to their car and planted me inside to calm down a bit and obviously to hear from me what had happened.
I guess it was a pretty straight forward accident; obviously my fault but definitely not on purpose. I had to have my alcohol levels checked (also obviously zero) and they wrote down all my details and I could move on. The motorman had been taken away in the meantime.
And then you have to get back in your car and drive away. My car – btw – had hardly a scratch. A little dent in the front bumper and a scratch along the front of the bumper but that was it. In a way it’s probably good to have to drive straight away after something like that. I had called Tom to tell him what happened but it would have been silly to let him come and pick me up. After all, I had to get back in the saddle, so to speak.
And then comes the waiting. Waiting to hear if the man you hit is gonna be ok. I had nothing to go on; no name only his license plate from his motorbike. The police had promised to call me in the afternoon but didn’t, so I started calling them myself this morning and they did call me back fairly quickly to tell me that the man had been released from the hospital and was gonna be ok eventually. Wearing a brace around his back for possibly a few months as he bruised something there but it could have been worse!
For someone who has never even hit a pole or whatever, this was an experience I hope not to repeat. And with that said, I will be leaving you with something a lot sweeter then the story I just shared; a delicious quinoa dessert. The quinoa is slowly steamed with lime and coconut and is then eaten lukewarm with rhubarb and raspberries.. Mmmm, what’s not to love?
Quinoa with coconut, lime and rhubarb
Yield: 2-3
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 55 mins
Ingredients:
- 100g quinoa
- 150ml coconut milk
- 1/2 lime (juice and zest)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 100g raspberries
- 100g rhubarb puree (or you can add more to taste)
- 12 pieces coconut with peel on
- mint (for decoration)
Directions:
| Get a shallow wide bowl that fit into your steamer and add the quinoa, coconut milk and 50 ml of warm water, the lime juice and zest and a pinch of salt. Place the bowl in your steamer and steam the quinoa for about 30-40 minutes. Stir once or twice during steaming and check if the quinoa is done to your liking at the end. Be careful as the steam is very hot. | |
| Take 2-3 glasses or bowls and put some raspberries at the bottom, stir the honey through the cooked quinoa and divide over your glasses. Add the rhubarb on top and garnish with the coconut and mint. | |

Lovely! Light, healthy, seasonal and delicious. A great idea. The flavor of coconut goes so well with that of rhubarb and raspberries…
Cheers,

Oh Simone …. You poor thing.
I am sending you serious hugs from Ireland.
I am sure that the shock will last a few weeks…
Take care of yourself and accidents happen .. So do not beat yourself up over it xxx

That’s what the police and the ambulance people kept saying to me too ‘ That accidents do happen and that’s just the way it is” Still, you never really expect anything to happen to you or maybe you just hope something like that will never happen..
Anyways I’m glad it is all gonna be ok in the end and yes, I’m pretty sure the shock will last for a while longer!

Oh Simone, I’m so sorry this happened. It has to be the worst feeling in the world. I’m glad the guy is okay. I always say, be glad about today, because tomorrow you may want it back. Your dessert is unusual and a nice balance to your terrible day.
I hope this doesn’t take your joy for driving away. I’ll pray for you.

Thanks so much Angela. I think my joy of driving is fairly safe. I’ve been doing a lot of driving since (as that is the only way I can get from A to B doing my job) and while I’m still overly alert I think I’ll be ok in a while.

What a horrible experience Simone. I hope you are ok. I have nightmares about hitting someone. I’ve been in a couple of car accidents, the first one I was hit by a drunk driver and ended up with neck injuries and the second one I was hit by a bus which ran a red light, and again I sustained neck injuries. When it happens the whole experience is surreal, but you are right, the best thing you can do is get back in the saddle.
Oh, and your steamed quinoa and rhubarb dessert is fabulous. I love the unusual blend of flavours.

Thanks Jennifer! Sorry to hear about your accidents. Especially when it is not your own fault it must be double hard to deal with. A drunk driver and a bus that ignored a red light… How bad are both of those? It looks like my victim will have no lasting damage but still it makes me feel incredibly guilty…

Such a traumatic experience, but I am happy you are okay!
This is another treat for the eyes, simply beautiful and pinky

You poor dear, that sounds like a nightmare! Thank goodness you weren’t hurt… I only just started driving in the fall, so I’m still terrified of what might happen thanks to my poor driving skills. I’ve already skidded on ice and crashed into a telephone pole though, so I’m crossing my fingers that that will be the worst of it.
On the other hand, you dessert here looks divine. You rarely see quinoa in dessert preparations, so I’m definitely intrigued!

O dear! Beter be careful Hannah with driving, especially on the ice…! And yes the quinoa works really well in desserts I think!

Oh, Simone, I can totally understand how shaken you were and how terrifying for both you and him and I am so glad that he’ll be okay. I had one horrible car accident (my car was completely totalled and I’m alive only because of the quick reflexes of the woman who was driving the car that plowed into me)… it is something that hangs over you for a long time. Happily there is a happy ending here and so glad you are okay! And comfort yourself with this beautiful, beautiful dessert xoxo

Simone – I am so glad you are okay and the motorist is too. I can only imagine how horrifying it would have been. I truly inspire the fact that in spite of having gone through, what you did and starting the day out rough, you cheered up, those of us that read/follow your blog, with such a sweet and delicious dessert using an ingredient like quinoa.
Thank you and hope you and the motorist get to feeling better, soon.
Best,
Sihi
