Sandwich with melon and ham
Ok, first a word of warning; since this week I am officially on a diet.. No scratch that; I am not on a diet but I am seriously watching what I eat. It’s only 5 weeks away before we go on holiday (yeah!!) but while I was thinking of losing some weight already back in march or possibly even before that, you know how it goes…. Time flies and all of a sudden panic strikes! O no, it’s almost time to wear the dreaded bikini so I HAVE to lose a few kilo’s!
Believe me I am really not the obsessive dieting type. I am overweight, yes, and I want to loose some of it, yes, but I am certainly not going to starve myself or go on one of those crazy crash diets. I just love to eat and I have a tendency to gain easily. The plus side is that I also tend to loose it easily as well.
Yesterday I had been watching a documentary on Dutch TV about girls with anorexia. Now that is a serious illness and those girls (the youngest was only 11!! 8 when she got the disorder). I really feel terribly sorry for the girls and their families. Even if they do recover, they will always have a mixed relationship with food. I understood from the series that eating is not really what anorexia is about, it’s a means to have control of a certain part of their lives. A lot of these girls came from troubled pasts; parents that died, parents that divorced (violently) and things like that. But even though the control thing is the main culprit, it’s still their relationship with food that is completely distorted. Which makes me happy that even though I am in need of losing some kilo’s I am able to keep a healthy perspective on things.

Imagine a life where you can never fully enjoy your food again. How hard would that be??
Anyway, I had to think about that while eating my simple yet delicious lunch today. Ofcourse everyone know the classic combination of melon with ham, but to put it on a sandwich was not something I would have thought about naturally, so I was a little sceptic when trying it out, but I can tell you it was absolutely delicious. Ofcourse it all largely depends on the taste of the melon and the ham you pick, but mine was delicious.
So even though I am on a diet, I am still determined to enjoy my food. For tonight I am planning on a light risotto with fennel, shrimp and salmon…. Mmmm….

Good advice Simone! The sandwich looks delicious and that risotto sound yum too!
A nice twist on a classic dish!
I think your approach to dieting is very sensible. I posted recently about my own once-difficult relationship with food, and while I don’t consider myself to have had an eating disorder, I do understand how eating, weight, and the need for control can be linked in one’s mind. Even now, if I find that I’ve gained a pound or two (not necessarily from overeating, but because my weight, like most women’s, fluctuates a little), I feel a hint of frustration, from feeling unable to control my body. The good news is, I get over it much more easily than I used to, and I continue to eat well every day. Food is not something we should feel miserable about – your post reminds us all of that.
So, good luck to you, and keep up that good attitude!
I love it when people say they can get their figures back in a week or a few days….gosh it will take me weeks yes…..52×3 to get mine back!!!
My sister had anorexia, it is a very bad disease…the skinny appearance is just the symptoms though. The sickness is very deep rooted!!!
Sorry to hear your sister had anorexia Nina. Yes, I understood from the documentary yesterday that the skinny part is really the outside but the problems beneath are so much bigger! Hope she is fully recovered!
By the way; I will definitely not be getting my figure in shape in a few weeks… But I have to start somewhere! lol
Oh I do like the look of this ham!! :
What an interesting idea! But wait, no mayonnaise or some sort of a spread?
That sandwich looks yummy. Good luck and hopefully you’ll loose in a healthy way.
What a great pairing in your sandwich and I can imagine how delicious it must have tasted.
Good luck on the healthy eating! Your sandwich looks delicious too:)
I love love love that idea of a sandwich! Why didn’t I think of that?
Good luck with the weight loss! Can’t go wrong with good healthy eating
Great sandwich combination..
I’m supposedly on a “diet” too. HAHAHA! I don’t do well on diets. I find that cutting back on portions and trying not to snack are the things I need to work on when I’m trying to lose some weight. I snack all the time. Very very bad habit.
Good luck with the diet! My little advice would be to stay away of carbs in the evening and have them for lunch instead. Some lean protein (I usually do not measure and eat as much as I want) with salad or vegetables is better for dinner and lighter on your stomach too!
Thanks for the advice Jo. I agree that it would be better to eat less carbs in the evening, but that is just not always possible, so I try and combine it a bit, but sofar I am doing quite well so fingers crossed…
